IPS superintendent, Dr. Lewis Ferebee has resigned effective Jan. 31. The superintendent will be leaving IPS  moving to Washington D.C. to lead the public school system. The IPS School Board is currently discussing the superintendent search and who will lead the district in the interim.

The following is an email he sent out to staff members:

Team IPS — Since the summer of 2013, I have had the pleasure of serving a thriving community that is like no other. I have also enjoyed getting to know and working alongside a talented team of professionals that I admire greatly. Together, we have served with an unwavering commitment to provide the students and families of Indianapolis Public Schools the best opportunities possible. Most importantly, we have better prepared more students for career and college advancing their ability to care for themselves and their families. The mission of IPS is to empower and educate all students to think critically, creatively, and responsibly, to embrace diversity, and to pursue their dreams with purpose. This statement remains vital and continues to guide our work each day.

While I will always relish in these remarkable times of transformation and unprecedented progress, it is time for my next challenge. As announced today, I will assume the role of Chancellor for the District of Columbia Public Schools in our nation’s capital. This decision is truly bitter-sweet. I am grateful for what we have accomplished together as a team and very confident the district is poised for continued success. Please know that during this transition I remain devoted to completing the collective bargaining process with all bargaining units and recognizing our loyal and talented employees with increased compensation.

I am so proud to have served with you and I thank you for your steadfast efforts and contributions.
