Doug Jones wins U.S. Senate by very close margins. At points, it looked like his Republican opponent, Roy Moore, was going to win. The special election for the U.S. Senate seat in Alabama was held on Tuesday, December 12th, 2017. Doug Jones has won this race by over 20,000 votes, or 1.5% as of the midnight following the election.

This race was not a kind race. In the primary, Roy Moore beat Sen. Luther Strange, who was aligned with the Republican party for this election. After the primary, the skeleton’s in Moore’s closet came back to haunt him.

Moore’s reputation collapsed after the Washington Post published an article about women accusing Roy Moore of sexual assault. Women isn’t the correct term for a lot of these cases though; a more accurate term would be girls. Leigh Corfman told the Washington Post about her interactions with Moore in 1979 while she was only 14-years-old. Moore had kissed Leigh, and on another occasion, Moore removed Leigh’s clothes and proceeded to touch her without her consent. He then forced her to touch him. Leigh Corfman told the Washington Post that she remembers thinking “Please just get this over with. Whatever this is, just get it over.”

The Washington Post article also included stories of women and girls who Moore made sexual advances on and sexually assaulted. He had used his position of power as Assistant District Attorney while he was in his 30’s to prey on young women and girls.

A popular subject in the news has been that if Moore wins, the United States has given its stamp of approval to pedophiles and rapists. The GOP has been called the “Grand Old Perverts” on some occasions, and Moore’s win would have finalized that nickname.

Democrats and even some Republicans did not support Moore because of these accusations. Doug Jones’ win symbolizes the American public’s disapproval of sexual assault and pedophilia. Now, the American public can rest in peace knowing that there is one less lawmaker who is a rapist, and there is another lawmaker who will protect the American public from people like Moore.
